Kansas University third baseman Travis Metcalf was named NCAA baseball’s National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Assn., the group announced Tuesday.
Metcalf, a sophomore from Wamego, also was tapped the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Week in a vote by a select panel of media members.
He went 10-for-17 (for a .588 batting average) and had five extra-base hits in the 21st-ranked Jayhawks’ four victories last week.
Metcalf is the second Kansas player — joining junior first baseman Ryan Baty — to win the NCAA award in three weeks after helping KU to a three-game sweep of then-No. 6 Louisiana State in Baton Rouge, La.
