The Big 12 Conference will not suspend Kansas University sophomore guard Aaron Miles for his role in an altercation during Sunday’s basketball game against Iowa State at Allen Fieldhouse.
“I think the officials handled it in an appropriate manner with the pushing and shoving of the players,” said Big 12 supervisor of officials Dale Kelley, who attended the game.
“I think appropriate action was taken with unsportsmanlike-conduct technicals assessed.”
Iowa State’s Jackson Vroman received a technical for pushing KU’s Wayne Simien in the back after Vroman fouled Simien in the second half. KU’s Aaron Miles also earned a ‘T’ for slapping ISU’s Jared Homan on the back of the head. At the time, Homan was screaming at Simien, who had turned and yelled at Vroman.
Kelley said Miles would not be disciplined because his whack to Homan’s head was a “push, not a punch.”
“There are no other issues there,” Kelley said. “From all accounts everything was handled appropriately.”
KU coach Roy Williams said he had spoken to Miles about his role in the fracas. He made the 6-foot-1 sophomore run extra at the end of Monday’s hour-long practice as a penalty.
“Aaron Miles was wrong. There’s no question about that whatsoever. He deserved that technical and ran at practice today extra because of it,” Williams said Monday night on his “Hawk Talk” radio show. “That’s not something we’ll put up with and not something we’ll make a habit of.
“Aaron did a great job apologizing to the Homan youngster before the game was even over and apologized to the press, afterwards to Iowa State’s team and our fans, the whole bit. It was an unfortunate thing that happened. Aaron was not the one who started it, by any means but his part in it should not have happened. We’re taking steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Tempers seem to flare this time of year.
“We’re in the middle of the dog days,” Williams said. “Frustration levels are pretty high. I do love the fact our players stayed on the bench. Jeff Graves got up and started walking toward it. Steve Robinson (assistant) got him stopped. Our guys in the past have done a great job of (avoiding brawls) and we will continue to do it that way.”
Miles said after the game he overreacted while trying to protect Simien, who had missed 11 games because of a shoulder injury.
“I think our team might have been too much on edge worrying about Wayne,” Williams said. “Wayne is a pretty big boy but it was his first game back after missing 11 games.
“Every time there was a foul on him I cringed. I think it was a hard-fought game with two teams who do try to play very hard. I didn’t see anything that I think people should worry about, saying those two teams are this and that.”
Williams hurt his finger in the fracas, but the finger felt “fine” Tuesday.
“I grabbed Wayne. He has one of those hooks (on brace). I put my finger through the hoop and as he was pulling away my finger went with him,” Williams said. “The finger felt good when I woke up and felt good all day.”
