Kansas University’s baseball team did the improbable this weekend when it swept a three-game series from No. 6 Louisiana State at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, one of college baseball’s most hostile environments.

Sunday’s doubleheader victories, 6-4 in the first game and 9-7 in the second, closed out a fabulous weekend for the Jayhawks. They beat LSU, 9-6 in 10 innings, Friday night.

“That was pretty special,” first-year KU coach Ritch Price said. “Our pitching was absolutely outstanding.”

Particularly the bullpen. In the first game, junior pitcher and Free State High graduate Brandon Johnson replaced starter Josh Duran and threw four sold innings of relief, surrendering just one run on three hits.

With Kansas up 3-2 in the fifth inning, third baseman Travis Metcalf delivered a clutch two-run home run, giving the Jayhawks a 5-2 lead. They never trailed again.

Metcalf homered again in the second game, giving him three in four games. His blast was part of a seven-run third inning by the Jayhawks, something from which LSU, one of the most storied programs in college baseball, never could recover.

Johnson (3-0) earned the victory in the first game. Ryan Knippschild (3-0) got the win in the second, pitching three innings of relief to seal the deal on a shocking weekend.

“Our two left-handed starters got to the fifth inning of each game,” Price said, “and it allowed us to use our bullpen properly.”

Kansas improved to 9-3 with the victories and has won eight of its last nine games. It marked the first time in KU’s history it had swept a three-game series from a ranked opponent.

“I think it’s a great statement,” Price said. “It’s a great statement in the direction we’re heading.”

Kansas returns home to start a three-game set with Eastern Michigan Friday at Hoglund Ballpark.

“The big thing for us now is that we have to continue to build on this,” Price said. “If we play like we played this weekend, we can beat anybody in the country.”
