By Staff     Feb 16, 2003

The Jayhawks struggled with shooting early in the second half, but managed to maintain their lead and pull away to bury the Cyclones. Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich paced Kansas in scoring with 19 points each, follwed by Aaron Miles with 14.

Miles set a school record for number of steals in a game (nine) and added nine assists.

Iowa State was without its head coach for much of the second half. A traveling call on ISU’s Jackson Vroman led to two quick technical fouls on Larry Eustachy, who was ejected from the game.

Miles hit three of the four free throws resulting from the technical fouls.

Vroman and Wayne Simien, who entered the game to thunderous applause in the first few minutes, started pushing each other after a wrap-up under the basket, which led to angry shoving between the teams. Vroman fouled out of the game and picked up a technical. Miles picked up a technical as well for hitting ISU’s Jared Homan in the back of the head.

Jake Sullivan led the Cyclones with 18 points, and Homan added 10 points. Simien scored seven points in his first action since separating his shoulder against UMKC on Jan. 4, while Michael Lee had points, Graves had four points, and Langford added two points.
