ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. ? Kansas University’s softball team placed second at Central Florida’s Triple Crown Invitational, despite winning four games and losing none at the tournament.
Sunday’s action was washed out, canceling the championship bracket games. Southern Illinois was declared the champion, edging KU for the title by a run-differential tie-breaker.
KU junior pitcher Kara Pierce won defensive MVP honors, while outfielder Sylvia Pfeiffer was named offensive MVP. Catcher Dani May and outfielder Melaney Torres also made the all-tournament team.
Pierce went 3-0 in the tourney, striking out 30 batters in 192¼3 innings and allowing one run for a 0.36 ERA. Pfeiffer went 5-for-8 with two homers and five RBIs.
May went 3-for-7, and Torres was 5-for-9 with a double and triple.
KU will travel Friday to the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in San Diego.
