Iowa State edged past the Kansas University swimming and diving squad, 126-118, in the Jayhawks’ final home meet of the season. The loss dropped the Jayhawks to 7-6 in duals this season.
KU swimmers earned four first-place finishes. Senior Beth Schryer won the 1,000 freestyle at 10:23.48 and triumphed in the 500 free at 2:05.97.
Senior Gwen Haley won the 200 butterfly at 2:05.30, and sophomore Amy Gruber took first place in the 200 free at 1:52.60.
KU divers Patti Stringham (three-meter) and Kristi Misejka (one-meter) also earned first-place finishes.
Swimmers Gina Gnatzig (200 back), Kristen Johnson (200 medley, 200 breast) and Aly Colver (100 free) each earned second-place finishes for the Jayhawks.
“It was a close race the entire meet, and to be within eight points of winning says a lot about how far our team has come,” KU coach Clark Campbell said.
“It could have gone either way, but Iowa State won some close races, and that made the difference in the final score,” he said.
Kansas returns to action Feb. 19 at the Big 12 Conference championships in Austin, Texas.
