ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. ? Four games played, four games won in 2003 for Kansas University’s softball squad.
The Jayhawks beat Purdue twice Saturday, 8-7 and 3-1, at the Triple Crown Invitational to advance to today’s semifinal game.
In the first game, Jayhawk senior starter Kirsten Milhoan got off to a rocky start. KU opened a 7-2 lead after three innings, but a Purdue rally in the fifth inning knotted the score at 7.
Then KU sophomore Lindsay Weinstein’s single scored junior Dani May in the bottom of the fifth, and the one-run cushion was all junior Kara Pierce needed. She pitched two-plus scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief.
Pierce (3-0) started the second game, and the Boilermakers never threatened. A two-run single by junior Sylvia Pfeiffer in the second and a Pfeiffer solo home run in the fifth was more than enough.
Pierce struck out nine and allowed just one run in the complete game. In three appearances, Pierce has struck out 30 batters in 192¼3 innings and allowed two earned runs.
KU will play the winner of Saturday’s Evansville-Stetson game at 9:45 a.m. today.
