KU soccer coach Mark Francis has signed six high school seniors to national letters of intent for the 2003 season.

“This is one of the best groups that we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Francis said. “We think that they are going come in and make an impact right away and make us better, which is what you hope from your recruiting class.”

Three players are from Kansas — Nicol Alvarez (Wichita Southeast High School), Holly Gault (Spring Hill HS) and Lacey Novak (Shawnee Mission South HS). The rest of the signees are Danika Erickson of Lakewood, Colo., Jessica Kilpatrick of Englewood, Colo., and Angie Miller of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Alvarez was a Class 6A all-state, all-region and all-city selection the past three seasons. She plays on the KCFC Revolution club team, which is currently ranked ninth by the U.S. Youth Soccer Assn.

Erickson is a two-time all-state selection and a three-time all-conference pick. She is the Kansas’ preseason high school player of the year.

Gault has been a team captain on the Kansas Olympic Developmental Program (ODP) team for the past five seasons, and is a five-time Kansas Cup champion. She played club soccer for the KC Mystics in 2001 and 2002.

Kilpatrick was a four-year letterwinner at Arapahoe High School. She and Erickson both play for the Colorado Girl’s Soccer Academy, which has won the state championship six times in the last seven years.

Miller was a three-year letterwinner in high school. She has played on the ODP team for four years and has won a National Indoor Championship while playing on the Spitfire semi-pro team.

Novak was the All-Sun Country Offensive Player of the year as a junior and was named first-team All-Sun Country, Sunflower League andn Johnson County and second-team All-KC Metro as a junior. She is the team captain for the 2002 Kansas Cup U-18 champion KCFC Alliance Pumas club team.
