The tradition of alumni and friends providing new cars for successful Kansas University coaches is being renewed.
A fund-raising drive is under way to raise about $45,000 for a new car for Mangino and his family, sources say. The target vehicle: a BMW convertible.
The practice of boosters showing their appreciation with an automobile has a long history, stretching back to Phog Allen. Not every winning coach has been given a car, but others who have been so honored include George Sauer, who coached football in the mid-1940s, and Larry Brown, who coached the 1988 NCAA champion basketball team.
The presentation of the Manginos’ automobile is expected to be announced next week in Orlando.
