KU’s Bookman ranked in United States top 10

Kansas University senior Leo Bookman, assistant KU track coach Doug Reynolds and volunteer assistant track coach Charlie Gruber have attained top 10 U.S. rankings for 2003, Track and Field News announced in its December issue.

Bookman, a three-time KU All-American, is ranked 10th in the U.S. in the 200-meter dash. The Dickinson, Texas, native won the 200 NCAA Indoor Championship with a KU indoor record time of 20.53. He also won the 200 NCAA Outdoor Championship (20.47) and recorded a seventh-place finish at the USA Track and Field Championships (20.89). The 2004 season will be Bookman’s first full-time track season as he was a member of the KU football team from 2000-02.

Reynolds placed third at the USA Outdoor Championships in the discus (205-9) and is currently ranked fourth overall in the U.S.

Gruber is a newcomer to the U.S. rankings and is currently ranked sixth in the 1500. The KU grad won the Kansas Relays mile, finished sixth at Portland’s Grand Prix 1500 with a personal-best time of 3:39.74 and finished fifth (3:45.29) at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.
