Big 12 pays tribute to Lawrence resident

Big 12 Conference graduate scholarships will be named in honor of Prentice Gautt, league commissioner Kevin Weiberg said Monday.

Gautt, who lives in Lawrence, has been an assistant commissioner since the league’s inception in 1997. He was named special assistant to Weiberg in 2003.

“Prentice (Gautt) has been a great role model,” Weiberg said. “He was not only an outstanding student-athlete at Oklahoma, but he has done so much based on his educational background, including earning his PhD.”

Gautt works with league schools in assessing and encouraging services to assist current and former student-athletes in adjusting to the transitions of life after sports.

The Big 12 has awarded 88 graduate scholarships since 1997. The projected scholarship amount for 2004 is nearly $7,000.

Jayhawks offering football camp

Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino will conduct a one-day football skills camp for children ages 12 to 18 at four locations this summer.

Camps will be June 1 in Lawrence, June 3 in Coffeyville and June 9 in both Wichita and Salina. The camp, stressing fundamentals, costs $10.

BU football taps captains

Baldwin — Baker University football coach Mike Grossner will have 10 team captains in his first season as the Wildcats’ boss this fall. The captains, all seniors, are DB Silas Dulan, WR Keenan Ganz, P Karl Halamicek, LB Tyler Hibler, OL Chance Nichols, DB Blake Pearson, RB John Reeves, RB Gerrad Speer, DL Luke Thompson and LB Jeff Frenya, of Lawrence.

Lion picks Ottawa U.

Shannon Fisher, who was a goalkeeper on Lawrence High’s girls soccer team this spring, signed a letter of intent with Ottawa University on Monday night.

KU’s Smith earns third-team A-A

Kansas University’s Caroline Smith has been named a third-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Smith, KU’s first soccer All-American, set the school single-season record for goals scored last fall with 19. The sophomore from Edina, Minn., is also the Jayhawks’ career goals leader with 31.

Kansas, ranked No. 13 in the NSCAA poll at the end of the season, compiled a record of 18-6-1 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Charities help Baker pin Lambuth, 66-56

Orlando, Fla. — Baker University nailed 23 of 31 free throws and held off Lambuth, 66-56, at the Disney NAIA Challenge women’s basketball tournament Tuesday morning.

Cory Shoaf led the Wildcats with 16 points. Erin Robinson added 13 points and Gretchen Patty 10. Shoaf was 6-of-6 at the foul line while Robinson and Courtney Lewis each made 7 of 8 charities.

Baker (5-5) will meet North Georgia at 10 a.m. today.

Kansas soccer team earns academic prize

Kansas University’s soccer team has earned the Team Academic Award by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

A total of 336 soccer programs (71 men, 265 women) posted a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher to qualify for the award.

KU finished with a school-best 18-6-1 record.

Baker women thump Tabor

Baldwin — Courtney Hodges and Ashley Ohlman each scored 10 points, leading Baker University to a 76-49 win Tuesday over Tabor at Collins Center.

Gretchen Patty led the Wildcats (3-4) with seven rebounds, and Erin Robinson added five assists.

Baker travels to Topeka for a 3 p.m. match Saturday against Washburn.

Ottawa U. football improves to 8-1

Ottawa — Derrick Ward rushed for a whopping 276 yards and three touchdowns, leading Ottawa University’s football squad to a 39-23 victory Saturday over McPherson.

Brandon Fischer rushed for a TD, and Bryant Calloway caught a TD pass from Emiliano Salazar for the Braves (8-1).

Ottawa travels to North Newton for a 1:30 p.m. game Saturday against Bethel.

KU rowers flounder

Manhattan — The Kansas University rowing squad ended its fall season with a 22-3 loss to Kansas State Saturday. The Jayhawks’ lone win came in the varsity four race, with the team notching a 21-second victory over the Wildcats. KU lost its other five races Saturday.

Baker’s Hallauer fifth at NAIA regional

Fayette, Mo. — Baker University senior Matt Hallauer qualified for the NAIA National Championship after a fifth-place finish at the Region V Championships Saturday. Hallauer finished the five-mile course in 25:59.1.

Junior Lindsey Christian led the women’s team with a 12th-place finish in 19:53 for the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) race. The BU men placed sixth out of 11 teams, and the women placed sixth out of nine.

Saint Mary trips HINU women

Leavenworth — The University of Saint Mary beat Haskell Indian Nations University, 74-59, in college women’s basketball at the Saint Mary Tipoff Classic.

Mellissa Catron led HINU (1-3 overall, 1-1 in the tournament) with 16 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Lucita Yesslith added 12 points and Samantha Pete contributed 11.

“We played well,” Fightin’ Indians coach Phil Homeratha said. “We played one of the better teams we’ll play all year. I feel good about it.”

Haskell plays host Thursday to Avila College. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

KU tennis squad competes in Tulsa

Tulsa, Okla. — The Kansas University tennis squad earned four victories Saturday at the Polo National Collegiate Preview.

Freshmen Brittany Brown and Ashley Filberth each won their singles matches, and the doubles tandems of Brown and sophomore Christine Skoda and seniors Kristen Steinbock and Emily Haylock also won.

The final round of the tournament is today.

Baker soccer rolls

Hillsboro — Josh McDaniel scored two goals, and Baker cruised Saturday to a 6-1 college soccer rout of Tabor College. Adrian Salazar, Michael Garven, Barry Cummings and Marty Johnston each scored for the Wildcats (5-2). Tabor fell to 0-8. Baker will play host to Columbia College Tuesday.

Baker volleyball splits

Olathe — Baker University’s volleyball squad went 2-2 Saturday at the MidAmerica Nazarene Invitational. BU (9-10, 2-1 HAAC) beat Friends and Sterling, but lost to Morningside and Tabor.

Haskell honoree

Haskell Indian Nations University’s Makyla Lone Wolf was named Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week. Lone Wolf, a sophomore from Lincoln, Neb., recorded 23 kills and seven aces in the Indians’ 3-1 win over William Jewell.

Smith selected again

For the second time this season, Kansas University’s Caroline Smith has been named Big 12 Conference offensive soccer player of the week. Smith recorded the fifth hat trick in KU history and the second of her career in the Jayhawks’ win over Florida State.
