Kansas University found some help for its secondary this weekend when cornerback Aqib Talib of Berkner High in Richardson, Texas, made an oral commitment to play football for the Jayhawks next season.
Talib (6-foot-2, 185 pounds) also had offers from Tulsa, Wyoming, Baylor and Arizona, but the senior committed to KU after his weekend campus visit.
“I committed to Kansas because they showed the most interest,” he told recruiting analyst Jon Kirby of rivals.com.
Talib had three interceptions this season and also blocked seven field goals.
“He’s got a 40-inch vertical jump, and he has long arms,” Berkner coach Jim Ledford told Kirby. “He had three interceptions in the first three games. After that, nobody threw his way. He was bored out there, so we even got him in at receiver.”
Kansas reportedly had eight prospects on campus for its last recruiting weekend before the Jayhawks leave Wednesday for the Tangerine Bowl. KU (6-6) plays North Carolina State (7-5) Dec. 22 in Orlando, Fla.
The Jayhawks also received oral commitments from receiver Dexton Fields (6-1, 186) of South Oak Cliff High in Dallas and linebacker Mozell Axson Jr. (6-1, 230) of Jenkins High in Lakeland, Fla.
Fields also had received a scholarship offer from Utah, but he told Kirby he intended to cancel that campus visit.
Axson’s father played at Miami from 1977 to 1980 and was one of his high school coaches. He also had offers from Iowa State, Louisville and South Florida.
