Jayhawks taking on Ball State tonight

After tonight, Kansas University’s women’s basketball team won’t see Allen Fieldhouse for a while.

The Jayhawks will play host to Ball State at 7:05 tonight, then hit the road for two four-team tournaments.

Kansas (3-2) will compete in Denver University’s tournament Dec. 20-21, then participate in the Dartmouth Blue Sky Restaurant Classic in Hanover, N.H., Dec. 29-30.

The Jayhawks won’t play another home game until Jan. 3 against San Diego.

“It’s really tough to have to be on the road and win ball games,” KU coach Marian Washington said.

Kansas is on a three-game winning streak, winning the Jayhawk Classic last weekend. KU ran over Cal State Fullerton and Texas-El Paso, outscoring them 161-96.

But besides a 70-64 win over Sacramento State Nov. 29 in the Oregon Classic, all KU’s success has come at Allen Fieldhouse.

The emergence of KU’s front-court fast-break attack sent the Cal State Fullerton and UTEP players scrambling on defense.

“They’ve been great and get up and down the court for us,” Washington said.

One of those forwards is sophomore Tamara Ransburg, who is happy to be playing well.

“We’re on a winning streak. That’s all I can say,” Ransburg said. “We got our heads on straight. We’re focused mentally, physically.”

Washington said the Jayhawks would have to focus on defense against Ball State (4-4), particularly when guarding the perimeter.

“We really have to play straight up on-ball defense,” Washington said. “I think it will be a test for us defensively.”
