Changes at the top abound in department

Who’s in since the change in the Kansas University athletics department leadership on June 7:

Lew Perkins, athletic director

Salary — $400,000

Perkins came to KU from the University of Connecticut, where he was athletic director for 13 years. He replaced Al Bohl, who had been at KU since 2001. Perkins held the same position at the University of Maryland from 1987 to 1990 and Wichita State University from 1983 to 1987. Perkins reports directly to Chancellor Robert Hemenway.

Larry Keating, senior associate AD

Salary — $145,000

Keating came to KU after serving two years as assistant commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He also spent 12 years as AD at Seton Hall University. Keating is in charge of scheduling for football and basketball, and will work with KU coaches.

Jim Marchiony, associate AD for external affairs

Salary — $140,000

Marchiony spent one year under Perkins at University of Connecticut as associate AD for external affairs. He previously spent 17 1/2 years with the NCAA. Marchiony is in charge of corporate sponsorships, licensing and sports communications.

Kelly Landry, associate AD/senior women’s administrator

Salary — $138,000

Landry held the same position at the University of Illinois for five years before coming to KU, and previously held the same spot at the University of Miami. She was an All-American discus thrower at the University of Alabama in 1986.

Sean Lester, associate AD for internal affairs

Salary — $125,000

Lester served six years under Perkins at University of Connecticut, first as director of athletic operations and event services and then as assistant AD for facility management and planning. Lester’s duties will involve strategic planning.

Brandon Macneill, assistant AD for strategic planning and administration

Salary — $95,000

Macneill had been an associate AD for marketing and development at Princeton University, and has a master’s degree in sports management from University of Connecticut. Perkins created the assistant AD position at KU.

Who’s out:

Richard Konzem,senior associate AD

Salary — $110,000

Konzem resigned after 22 years with the athletic department. He previously worked with the Williams Educational Fund, compliance and ticket issues. Konzem, who was a candidate for the AD position, will take over later this month as interim associate director of the Dole Institute of Politics.

Doug Vance, sports information director

Salary — $76,125

Vance was sports information director at KU for 20 years. He said Perkins offered him an opportunity to stay on the staff, but he opted instead to consider other options, including consulting work.

Janelle Martin, associate AD for compliance and senior women’s administrator

Salary — $75,011

Martin had served 15 years with the KU Athletics Corp. She resigned shortly after Perkins was hired, saying she wanted a “change of pace” and that her departure wasn’t tied to Perkins’ arrival.
