KU, Northwestern still scoreless

The Jayhawks won the coin toss and defered to the second half, and the Wildcats chose to receive. Jason Wright returned the ball to the Northwestern 21-yard line.

Northwestern moved the ball to the 50-yard line, but KU’s defense held on third down and six to go. Brian Huffman punted the ball to Charles Gordon, who called for a fair catch at KU’s 16-yard line.

After a two-yard run by Clark Green, the sophomore tailback gained a first down with a 12-yard scamper to the left. An incomplete pass by quarterback Bill Whittemore and a three-yard loss on a shovel pass to Green, Whittemore scrambled and found Gordon down the right sideline for a nine-yard gain. Failing to get a first down, KU sent out punter Curtis Ansel, who boomed an 59-yard punt that Kunle Patrick returned seven yards to the Northwestern 12-yard line.

On the ensuing drive, KU’s linebacking corps lived up to coach Mark Mangino’s expectations of being a strong point. Banks Floodman had two tackles and Gabe Toomey tackled Wright for a five-yard loss on second down. Gordon returned Huffman’s punt nine yards to Northwestern’s 49-yard line.

After a three-and-out by the Jayhawks, Ansel kicked a 49-yard punt that Dan Coke downed at Northwestern’s 2-yard line.
