Dekalb, Ill. ? The Kansas University volleyball team started the 2003 season solidly, defeating Western Kentucky, 3-0, Friday in the first day of the Best Western Inns and Suites Invitational.
Playing without injured sophomore setter Andi Rozum and junior libero Jill Dorsey, who was injured during practice before the match, the Jayhawks (1-0) won 30-25, 30-27, 30-25 for their sixth consecutive season-opening victory.
Senior Sarah Rome had 14 kills and 14 digs for the Jayhawks; junior Ashley Michaels had 12 kills; and freshman Janaina Correa and sophomore Josi Lima each had nine kills.
“Tonight was a very good win over a team that went to the NCAA Tournament last year,” KU coach Ray Bechard said.
The Jayhawks next play Liberty at 11 a.m. today, then tournament host Northern Illinois at 7 tonight.
