Kansas University junior football co-captain Travis Watkins broke his right foot during Wednesday night’s scrimmage and will be out six to eight weeks.
Coach Mark Mangino confirmed after Thursday morning’s practice that the defensive tackle from Derby would miss the Aug. 30 season opener against Northwestern, but he declined to discuss the specifics of Watkins’ injury.
Watkins’ father, Sam, said in a phone interview Thursday afternoon that X-rays after Wednesday’s practice revealed the break and that his son was scheduled to see a doctor Thursday afternoon.
“He should be back this season,” Sam Watkins said.
