Future of KU’s softball field remains ‘in limbo’

Sunday’s contest against Baylor was supposed to be Kansas University’s last softball game at Jayhawk Field. Now KU coach Tracy Bunge isn’t so sure.

“We’re in limbo,” Bunge said following Friday’s 1-0 win over Nebraska.

In November, Cheryl Womack, a Kansas City business woman, pledged $2 million to help build a new softball stadium. However, the total cost of the project is close to $4 million, and that goal hasn’t been reached.

“It’s an economy thing,” Bunge said.

Preliminary construction was scheduled to begin Monday, with the heavy work set to start in mid-to-late May.

Warren Corman, the university architect, said work would have to start by then for the field to be seeded properly in time for play in the spring of 2004.

“It’s terribly disappointing,” Bunge said.

Kansas is one of only two Big 12 Conference schools with varsity softball that doesn’t have a stadium. The other is Iowa State. KU has been playing at Jayhawk Field since 1985.
