Road to new coach

March 17 — UCLA fires head coach Steve Lavin. Kansas University coach Roy Williams is rumored to be among the candidates for the job.

March 27 — Williams says he isn’t distracted by the rumors while KU is in California during the NCAA Tournament.

April 1 — Matt Doherty is fired from the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina. Williams is among those said to be in the running to fill the UNC vacancy.

April 7 — Immediately after KU’s loss to Syracuse University in the national championship game, Williams tells CBS’ Bonnie Bernstein, “I could give a shit about North Carolina right now,” when asked twice about the UNC coaching vacancy.

April 9 — KU fires Athletic Director Al Bohl, and Chancellor Robert Hemenway confirms that UNC has asked for permission to speak with Williams about UNC position.

April 14 — Williams accepts the head coaching position at UNC. Rumors suggest Bill Self, of Illinois, is the leading candidate to take Williams’ place.

Wednesday — KU contacts Illinois about speaking to Self.

Thursday — Williams attends the KU basketball banquet in Lawrence. Wichita State University head coach Mark Turgeon takes his name out of consideration for the KU job.

Friday — Sources tell Journal-World that KU has offered Self a five-year contract worth about $1.5 million a year.

Monday — At a 1 p.m. news conference, KU announces Self as the new head coach.
