KU coaches statements about Williams’ departure

By Staff     Apr 15, 2003

The following are statements released by KU coaches about Roy Williams’ departure for the University of North Carolina.

Head softball coach Tracy Bunge
“My first reaction was of terrible disappointment realizing that we are no longer going to have Coach Williams as our men’s basketball coach. I’m sad for KU, I’m sad for our fans and I’m sad for our basketball players. On the other hand, I’m going to wish coach Williams good luck. I know that he’s going to continue to be successful at North Carolina. I know he’s excited about going home. There’s nothing like a homecoming of sorts when going back to your alma mater. I had the wonderful experience of doing that seven years ago, and there’s nothing more rewarding than being able to have a dream come true. And we all know that was coach’s (Williams) dream. I’m happy for him, and I’m happy for North Carolina, but disappointed for KU.”

Head volleyball coach Ray Bechard
“First and foremost I’m a basketball fan and I’ll miss watching his teams play. All of his teams played with purpose, energy and enthusiasm. Coach Williams truly cared about KU student-athletes from all our different athletic programs. I’m happy for him and wish him the best of luck.”

Head swimming coach Clark Campbell
I am very happy for coach Williams and his family, but I am also sad for us. Kansas basketball has a long rich history, and I am sure we will get a new coach who will take us to new heights.”

Head football coach Mark Mangino
“I’m disappointed he left but I have great respect for his decision.”

Head women’s golf coach Megan Menzel
“Our team will miss him and his staff a lot. Not only did he support the women’s golf program but his staff did as well. We want to wish him the very best and look forward to the future of Kansas basketball.”

Head men’s golf coach Ross Randall
“I am disappointed for KU and our athletic department but certainly am happy for (Coach Williams). As a friend I know what he went through. I certainly appreciate what he has done for all of our sports. The public can’t imagine all the help that he has been to all of us at KU.”

Head track and field coach Stanley Redwine
“I think coach Williams did what was best for himself and his family. The university will miss him, but I believe we will hire someone who will do a great job, just as he did.”

Head women’s basketball coach Marian Washington
“When I first heard the news it was certainly very sad because Coach Williams meant a lot to this university. However, sometimes in life we have to make decisions that are not only best for ourselves but also best for our families as well. So I support his decision and wish him and his family the best.”
