Bob Allen led KU with 13 points, and Howard Engleman added 12 for the Jayhawks, who ended the year with a 19-6 record.

Center Clyde Lovellette was unstoppable, scoring 33 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, leading Kansas to its first NCAA crown, 80-63, over St. John’s.
Lovellette became the first player in NCAA history to lead the nation in scoring and win an NCAA title in the same season — a feat that has yet to be matched.
Kansas, 28-3 on the year, had key contributions from Robert Kenney and Dean Kelley. Reserve guard Dean Smith also saw action in the NCAA Tournament.

Indiana guard Bob Leonard hit a free throw with 27 seconds remaining to break the game’s 14th tie and give the Hoosiers the 69-68 victory over the defending national champions.
The game featured a battle of 6-foot-9 centers: Don Schlundt, who scored 30 for Indiana, and B.H. Born, who scored 26 for Kansas.

Dick Harp’s Jayhawks, led by Wilt Chamberlain, pushed North Carolina into triple overtime at Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium. But Joe Quigg’s two free throws with six seconds to play in the third overtime secured the victory for the Tar Heels.

Danny Manning scored 31 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Kansas past Big Eight Conference-rival Oklahoma in the 50th NCAA Tournament championship game, winning at Kemper Arena in Kansas City.
The Jayhawks were considered a “bubble” team before receiving an at-large bid. Once in, “Danny and the Miracles” overcame many odds to win the title for coach Larry Brown.
Kansas, plagued with injuries all season, finished the year with a 27-11 mark.

Indianapolis
Duke won its first national championship under coach Mike Krzyzewski with a 72-65 victory over Kansas. The Blue Devils hit 20 of 28 free throws to KU’s four of eight. Mark Randall led Kansas with 18 points and 10 rebounds; Terry Brown added 16 points and Adonis Jordan scored 11 in the Kansas loss.
