KU, Tulsa bosses on same committee

Only two of the five members of the powerful NCAA presidential search committee represent Div. I-A football schools.

Those two schools Tulsa and Kansas will be meeting tonight at Skelly Stadium on the TU campus.

Tulsa president Bob Lawless is chair of the committee charged with finding a successor for current NCAA president Cedric Dempsey, and KU chancellor Robert Hemenway is a member of that five-person group.

“Bob and I have known each other for a long time,” Hemenway said Friday.

However, the two aren’t such good friends that they have made a friendly wager on the outcome of tonight’s contest.

“No, we don’t have any bets,” Hemenway said. “We’re not quite to that point yet.”

Because of obligations involving the KU Med Center, Hemenway will not be able to attend tonight’s game in Tulsa. However, he said he would try to catch as much of it as he could on the radio.

The other three members of the NCAA presidential search committee are Milt Gordon, president of Cal State Fullerton; Patricia Cormier, president of Longwood U; and Bette Landman, president of Arcadia U.

The five-person group, working with an Atlanta head-hunting firm, remains on track to identify a short list of finalists that the executive committee will interview on Oct. 10-11 at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis.

Among the potential candidates is Hemenway’s predecessor at Kansas, Gene Budig. Budig, who left KU in 1994 to become president of baseball’s American League.
