Whack-y pick: KU over BG

By Gary Bedore     Sep 20, 2002

Does it seem like Big 12 Conference football teams are playing the same non-conference opponents?

Troy State and Tulsa are the primary ex-officio Big 12 members with three conference schools on their schedules. Troy State has Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa State; Tulsa tangles with Oklahoma, Baylor and Kansas.

Six others Southern Cal, UCLA, Bowling Green, Louisiana Tech, SMU and New Mexico have two Big 12 foes apiece on their slates.

All this familiarity should make it easier to pick winners, right? Not necessarily, when all those prognosticators are pointing their Web browsers to KUsports.com in hopes of winning a “We Whacked Woodling” T-shirt.

So far I’ve made it difficult to win a T-shirt by missing just five of 30 games. I apologize. Normally, I don’t do that well it must be just dumb luck. This week poses some tougher challenges, so maybe I’ll revert to form.

Example: I’m going out on a limb and picking Kansas to knock off Bowling Green even though the Falcons are a 10 1â2 -point favorite. Last week I picked the Ohio school to defeat Missouri although not by such a wide margin but I don’t think BG can win two straight from Big 12 schools.

I may be wrong, but what the heck? All the more reason to go to KUsports.com and take a whack at whacking me.

Here are this week’s picks:

Texas Tech 32, North Carolina State 23 Another shoot-out in Lubbock. Last week it was Kliff Kingsbury against Ole Miss whiz Eli Manning. This week it’s Kingsbury, the Big 12’s all-time leading passer, against Wolfpack QB Philip Rivers, who ranks No. 1 in the nation in passing efficiency.

UCLA 48, Colorado 0 Buffaloes’ streak of 161 games without being shut out comes to an end. Colorado’s offense in a yoke with QB Craig Ochs (concussion) unable to play.

Texas A&M 6, Virginia Tech 5 Aggies lead nation in rushing defense, but have no running game of their own. Or passing game, for that matter. Still, No. 7-ranked Hokies will be humbled at Kyle Field.

Baylor 25, Tulsa 11 Hopefully, hapless Golden Hurricane will be back-to-back Big 12 fodder with Kansas scheduled to visit Skelly Stadium next week. Toothless Tulsa in throes of 13-game losing streak.

Iowa State 29, Troy State 13 Trojans, coming off desultory 20-15 victory against Southern Utah, may catch Cyclones napping after stirring Iowa game, but Seneca Wallace too talented to let Iowa State suffer an embarrassment.

Southern Cal 16, Kansas State 3 If Colorado couldn’t stop Trojans in Boulder’s thin air, there is little reason to think K-State can blunt high-flying Troy in Manhattan’s thick air.

Oklahoma State 22, SMU 19 Cowboys, flat after last week’s outing against UCLA, survive scare from winless Ponies.

Texas 54, Houston 12 Houston isn’t dog-meat team it was last year, but Cougars no match for No. 3-ranked Longhorns, particularly in Austin. Chris Simms and Cedric Benson pile up more yardage.

Kansas 23, Bowling Green 16 Falcons did everything right in 51-28 stunner against Missouri last week, but Bee Gees will come down with Saturday Night Fever in Lawrence.
