Terry Allen arrived at KU, to take his first Division I-A head-coaching job, he left the University of Northern Iowa as the winningest active coach in Division I-AA. Five seasons later, he left as the only coach in KU history to post five consecutive losing seasons and be fired during a season to be replaced by an interim coach.
Following a 40-6 loss to Kansas State, with 4 games remaining, athletic director Al Bohl suspended the sword of Damocles over Allen’s head. Allen was informed by associate AD Richard Konzem that he would have to win out the remaining four games to keep his job.
Following a 51-7 loss to Nebraska, and refusing to resign, Allen was dismissed. Allen posted a record of 20-33 while at KU.
