A large flock of Jayhawk faithful has taken wing to attend tonight’s Kansas University football game at Nevada-Las Vegas if ticket sales are any indication.

“We’ve gone through approximately 1,600 tickets,” Diana Grover, director of ticket sales, said Thursday. “We’re getting ready to ask for 100 more.”

The prospect of watching the Jayhawks play, then hitting the casinos and shows, seems to make the road trip a popular one for KU fans from throughout the country.

Grover said she had sold tickets to groups of KU fans from Utah, California, Georgia, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Washington, Texas, Illinois, Arkansas and Nevada.

Doug Vance, KU assistant athletics director, said he had heard that some alumni groups were staying at Bally’s Hotel and Casino and at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.

Once the fans arrive, the KU Alumni Association has planned a party for them before the 9 p.m. kickoff.

“We’re just having one big pre-game party,” said Melissa Sutton, membership services secretary.

She said there would be a barbecue and rally at the KU tent at the Seven Acre Tailgate area in UNLV’s Sam Boyd Stadium. The rally will include KU athletics director Al Bohl, the KU spirit squad and Baby Jay.

“We’re expecting about 500 people,” Sutton said. “They’re going to sell (KU) merchandise. There will be lots of giveaways.”
