Jayhawks in last place on recruit Butch’s radar

By J-W Staff Reports     Oct 27, 2002

Appleton, Wis., high school senior big man Brian Butch has a final list of Kansas, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Marquette.

Of course, speculation is rampant on which school is “leading” for the 6-foot-11 pivot, who says he will make a decision either this week or next.

Butch’s AAU coach said last week two schools seem to be ahead of the others, but would not name the two.

But Appleton West coach Greg Hartjes told the Madison Capital-Times that Wisconsin is “probably one of the two. Sometimes it seems like Carolina is the other one, sometimes it seems like Marquette is the other one.”

He told the Appleton paper the Jayhawks “are on the outside looking in.”

Butch has been concentrating on a family illness more than recruiting of late.

One of the questions Butch is trying to answer, Hartjes told the Capital-Times, “is what kind of risk is he willing to take? Some schools are riskier than others.”

KU has already landed commitments from Reno, Nev., center David Padgett, Los Angeles shooting guard Omar Wilkes, Oklahoma point guard Jeremy Case and Oklahoma swingman J.R. Giddens. The Jayhawks have one scholarship remaining.
