Ten Jayhawks earn Academic All-Big 12 honors

Ten Kansas University football players were named to the 2002 football academic all-Big 12 teams, conference officials announced on Wednesday.

Seven Jayhawks – Zach Dyer, Barry Goodrich, Justin Henry, Jake Letourneau, Derick Mills, Travis Watkins and Darren Rus – were named to the academic all-Big 12 first team, while Johnny Beck, John Harvey and Brandon Lacy were named to the second team.

Letourneau is a three-time academic all-Big 12 selection and was recently named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-American All-District VII team. A fifth-year senior, Letourneau has a 3.38 grade point average with a major in Pre-Optometry/Biology.

Goodrich is making his second appearance on the academic all-Big 12 first team while Lacy is a two-time academic all-Big 12 second-team selection. Mills, who was a second team all-Big 12 selection last year, qualified for first-team honors this season.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the football academic all-conference squad consisted of 96 combined first-team members with 64 on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
