Doctors say KU’s Hawkins healthy

Kansas University basketball coach Roy Williams spent 19 minutes on a treadmill-endurance test as part of a recent physical examination.

Jayhawk red-shirt freshman Jeff Hawkins spent 20 minutes on the treadmill Wednesday during a physical exam scheduled after Hawkins felt chest pains during Tuesday’s exhibition game against Washburn.

“Coach told me he got 19. I knew I had to get better than 19, so I wouldn’t hear it from him,” Hawkins said.

Hawkins was given a clean bill of health by doctors ” who thought the chest pains could have resulted from a recent sore throat mixed with the adrenaline from playing a game ” and was giddy Wednesday when he informed Williams of his performance.

“I told him, ‘Congratulations, he’s competing with a 52-year-old has-been,'” Williams said. “I told him not to get too cocky about it. He felt very good, very relieved. All of us were relieved.

“I think he had a touch of the bug. We got out there and he hadn’t done it very often in the last year and a half. He got a little winded and felt a little pain and I think it alarmed him.”

Hawkins, a 5-foot-11 guard, said the treadmill test was difficult.

“Every three minutes the incline goes up,” he said. “I started walking and in the ninth minute jogging. It was kind of tough. I’m not going to lie. I was tired.”

Hawkins said he definitely “hurt” during Tuesday’s game.

“I was never scared. I knew something was wrong, but it wasn’t that scary,” he said.

Meanwhile, sophomore forward Wayne Simien has been practicing some in preparation for next Tuesday’s NIT opener against Holy Cross at 8 p.m. in Allen Fieldhouse. Simien has been bothered by tendinitis in his right ankle, and Williams said he wants Simien to have “good practices” Sunday and Monday.
