In its first home meet of the season, the Kansas University swimming and diving team made short work of Wyoming and Southwest Missouri State at a triangular on Saturday at Robinson Natatorium.
The Jayhawks (3-1) posted 13 first-place finishes en route to a 78-35 thumping of the Cowboys and 75-20 rout against the Bears.
Beth Schryer won the 1,000-meter freestyle in 10:28.75, one of 21 season-best times posted by the Jayhawks. Amy Gruber won the 200 freestyle at 1:52.96, with Gina Gnatzig a close second at 1:53.85.
Ashley Dower and Aly Colver went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle with times of 24.61 and 24.75. Kristen Johnson won a pair of races, capturing the 200 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:08.00 and 2:21.64.
Heidi Landherr and Julie Ottmar went 1-2 in the 200 backstroke after each finished in season-best times of 2:08.83 and 2:09.16. Gnatzig took first place in the 500 freestyle after clocking in at 5:03.54, more than four seconds faster than second place.
“Ashley Dower and Heidi Landherr were both our program’s swimmers of the meet,” Kansas coach Clark Campbell said. “They were both amazing today. Heidi’s four in-season-best times were amazing.”
Kansas’ Patti Stringham won the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions after scoring 240.55 and 269.35 points :quot; putting her five points away from qualifying for the NCAA Zone meet. Kristi Misejka placed second and Tayler Eldridge third in both events.
“For the training we did this week in practice and this morning, I am amazed at how many good swims we had today,” Campbell said.
“We had an outstanding week of practice, and I am pleased with how we raced. This should put us right on target for a good North Carolina Invitational.”
The Jayhawk swimmers and divers’ next competition comes November 21-24 in the North Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
