Nebraska easily rolled over Kansas, 45-7, in Big 12 football action Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
The Cornhuskers rolled up 414 yards of total offense in the game, compared to KU’s 224.
Kansas wasn’t able to muster much offensive firepower after the first quarter, when KU quarterback Jonas Weatherbie came out of the game with a season-ending injury.
After the game, Mangino told reporters that Weatherbie had torn the anterior cruciate on his right knee and that the senior’s football career at KU was over.
Weatherbie threw his first career touchdown in the early going, tying the game at 7-7 with 10:20 left in first quarter. Weatherbie then took a hard hit, came down on his right knee. Weatherbie was unofficially three-for-nine in passing, had 74 yards in passing and 16 yards rushing before coming out.
After Weatherbie went out, freshman quarterback Brian Luke and junior wide receiver Greg Heaggans began trading off at calling the signals for the Jayhawks. At the end of the game, unofficial stats showed Luke was 7 for 22 in passing for 79 yards. Heaggans had eight carries for 11 yards, unofficially.
Nebraska dominated the game after Weatherbie went out, especially in the second half.
On the first possession of the second half, Nebraska tight end Aaron Golliday hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jammal Lord to stretch Nebraska’s lead. The touchdown capped a five-play, 80 yard drive, making it 31-7, Cornhuskers.
Nebraska followed up on that with another quick touchdown. After the NU defense blocked a KU punt, Nebraska safety Aaron Terpening picked up the fumble and ran 30 yards into the end zone. With the PAT, that made it 38-7, with 11:52 left in the third quarter.
With 3:56 left in third quarter, Nebraska scored again when Josh Davis ran four yards over left tackle. The point-after was good, making it 45-7.
In the first half, Nebraska got on the board first, when Diedrick rushed up the middle for a 53-yard touchdown with 11:09 left in the first quarter. With the point-after, it was 7-0.
KU came right back. Weatherbie threw his first career touchdown pass, a 50-yarder to Byron Gassaway. KU kicker Johnny Beck put through the point-after, tying the game 7-7, at 10:20 left to play in the first quarter.
Nebraska quickly overtook the lead again on a three-play drive, capped by a 30-yard touchdown run by Nebraska’s David Horne, making it 14-7 with the point-after.
With 9:13 left in the first half, Nebraska scored again. Lord threw a pass to Wilson Thomas for 27 yards and Nebraska’s third touchdown, capping a 47-yard, seven-play drive. The point after made it 21-7.
Nebraska’s final score of the half was a 27-yard field goal by Josh Brown, with 3:26 left. Nebraska got the ball on the Kansas 29, but had to settle for a field goal, making it 24-7.
