Kansas City ? Kansas University golfer Casey Harbour was one of nine players to advance Monday during the first round of qualifying for the U.S. Open.
Bryan Norton of Mission Hills shot 2-under-par 68 at Kansas City Country Club and topped a field of 119 players in the U.S. Open local qualifier.
Harbour, a senior from Lake Quivira, was one stroke off the lead with a round of 69. Former Jayhawks Chris Thompson and Jake Istnick both shot 71s and also qualified for the sectional tournament in June.
Others advancing Monday were Jon Troutman, 70; Bryan Milberger and Chad Lydiatt with 71s; Brett Alexander at 72; and Bruce Vaughan. Vaughan and five others shot 73, but Vaughan sank a 13-footer on the second playoff hole to move on.
The U.S. Open will be June 10-16 at Bethpage State Park Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
