More than 550 people were on hand Friday at Hoglund Ballpark to take advantage of Quarter Hot Dog Night and watch Kansas take on Oklahoma, but Mother Nature had other plans.
Rain and lightning forced the postponement of the opening game of the three-game series. Kansas led, 3-2, in the top of the sixth inning. The game will be finished at 1 p.m. today; Game Two will follow 30 minutes later.
“Sometimes it goes like that,” KU coach Bobby Randall said. “What can you do? It was a great night for baseball, it was a great crowd. Both teams were playing well and both pitchers were pitching well. There’s so much storm around here and the field’s so wet right now, I think it’s the smartest thing tonight.”
Kansas starter Jeff Davis had retired two batters in the top of the sixth before the game was postponed.
“We were playing good baseball and we just need to come back tomorrow and win it tomorrow,” Randall said.
After the game, Randall was asked about his job security after the Fresno (Calif.) Bee reported Thursday that Ron Scott, head coach at Fresno City College, had close ties to Kansas athletic director Al Bohl and might be considered if Randall is replaced, but KU’s coach wouldn’t discuss the issue.
“If you want to talk about the game or the players we have some great players to write stories about this is not about me,” Randall said. “This is about KU baseball and everybody involved about it.”
