Kansas University’s Matt Tribble would not have even been able to hit the cutoff man from his spot in right field two weeks ago.
The Jayhawk with the highest batting average .347 on the team wouldn’t have been good for more than a few drag bunts, at best, even one week ago.
The sophomore right fielder was downright useless he missed eight games because of a pulled oblique muscle on the field for Kansas’ last four series and returned to play just five days ago at Illinois-Chicago.
Coach Bobby Randall said some major leaguers take more than 15 days to come back from such an injury, but not Tribble.
“He must have a super healing ability,” Randall said. “And we sure did need him out there.”
Tribble went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the Jayhawks’ 12-2 six-inning drubbing of Centenary (15-40) Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.
It was more of the same in the nightcap. Tribble ripped two doubles in a 3-for-5 performance, drove in three runs and scored three times in Kansas’ 13-5 victory over the Gents.
“I’m just glad to be back playing,” Tribble said. “We’re all excited about finishing the season strong and I don’t want to spend any more time on the bench.”
The Jayhawks (20-24) got to the Gents early in the first game. Kansas’ first four batters reached base and were keyed by sophomore left fielder Ryan Baty’s and senior third baseman’s Ryan Klocksien’s doubles. In all, the Jayhawks tagged Centenary pitchers Mark Williams and Clyde Shields for six hits and five runs in the first inning.
Randall said he thought the Gents might have been tired because they finished their finals last week and could have been jet-lagged from the flight. Whatever was bogging Centenary down sure didn’t ease its grip in the second inning, either.
With one out and junior center fielder Lance Hayes on second base, Tribble ripped an RBI double. Junior second baseman Casey Spanish followed with a single and Baty provided the big bat as he homered to left-center and gave Kansas a 7-0 lead.
“This does feel good,” Randall said. “It really does feel good, we needed this. We didn’t make any errors, we got some hits and hit when men were on base. We threw the ball through the strike zone and did what we needed to do.”
Senior right-hander Jake Wright threw a complete game, seven-inning and seven-hit gem in the first game. Freshman lefty Chris Jones and sophomore righty Chris Smart tag-teamed the Gents in the late game, allowing 10 hits.
“Jake struggled in the first couple of innings and I told him, ‘You gotta throw it through the strike zone,'” Randall said. “This was Jones’ first outing since Wichita State (April 16) and was not quite as sharp as he has been.”
