East Regional: Duke close to home

? Duke coach Gail Goestenkors gave her Blue Devils some simple advice as they prepared for practice Friday at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.

“Coach G told us when we got off the bus that we need to treat this like it’s our home court,” freshman Monique Currie said, “and we don’t lose on our home court.”

It’s not Cameron Indoor Stadium, but it’s close enough. The top-seeded Blue Devils will be playing this weekend’s East Regional at an arena that is only a 20-minute drive east of Durham on Interstate 40.

Duke faces fourth-seeded Texas today in the round of 16. The winner advances to Monday’s regional final against the winner of today’s South Carolina-Drake game.

The Blue Devils (29-3) enter with a school-record 20-game winning streak. They haven’t had to leave North Carolina since a Feb. 2 game at Maryland. That streak includes three wins in the ACC tournament.

“We’ve been in the state forever, it seems like,” Goestenkors said. “That’s been to our advantage, especially with eight players, because fatigue could become a factor. We’ve been very fortunate in that we’ve been able to get a lot of rest.”

Texas (22-9) flew into Raleigh on Thursday and had a shootaround at the arena that night.

“We’re not in the comforts of home, but we’ve beaten some great teams on the road,” senior Tracy Cook said. “I think the whole environment no matter where you’re at is so much fun. That’s what we’re going to be feeding off of.”
