Students recognized for doctoral research

Two Kansas University doctoral students in social welfare have been selected for Hartford Fellowships.

Miko Nakashima and Mercedes Bern-Klug each will receive $40,000 to support their research. Seven winners were selected nationwide.

Nakashima’s research focuses on the social and spiritual lives of terminally ill adults ages 66 to 103. She is from Nagoya, Japan.

Bern-Klug’s research regards the social activity of ill nursing home residents in the Kansas City area.

The program, which honors graduate students studying geriatric social work, is sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation in New York.
