A day after surviving a close match with Texas Tech to pick up its first Big 12 victory of the season, Kansas University pulled off its biggest stunner of the season on Saturday when the Jayhawks rocked Oklahoma State, 6-1, at Alvamar Racquet Club.
“It’s awesome,” said Kristen Steinbock, who teamed with her twin sister, Courtney, to win the first point of the match, 8-2 in doubles, over OSU’s Linda Faltynkova and Katarzyna Kolodynsva. “It’s our biggest win of the season, so far.”
Against Oklahoma State, Kansas won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches.
Cheryl Mallaiah, Emily Haylock, Courtney Steinbock, Aurelie Bejar and Kim Lorenz were all victorious for Kansas. Jayhawk Paige Brown suffered just her second setback of the season after moving up to the No. 3 spot during the weekend matches.
“I am very proud of how we played all the way though the match,” said KU head coach Kilmeny Waterman, whose team improved to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12. “This is a real turning point with this team knowing that we can win big matches.”
Mallaiah, who defeated OSU’s No. 1 singles player, Linda Faltynkova, 6-2, 6-3, said the Jayhawks can build on Saturday’s victory.
“I really think we are playing well right now,” Mallaiah said. “This win is a huge confidence booster for this team.”
KU had dropped four in a row to Oklahoma State before Saturday’s breakthrough victory.
KU today will go for its third win in a row over a Big 12 foe. The Jayhawks will play host to Oklahoma at 1 p.m. at Alvamar.
“It would a great way to get the Big 12 season going,” Kristen Steinbock said. “While our attitude was good heading into this match, this completely lifts us up.”
