Kansas University’s softball team will be in Tampa, Fla., this weekend for the Speedline Invitational. The Jayhawks (8-8) will play Wisconsin and Florida Atlantic today, then meet UT-Chattanooga and UMass on Friday. On Saturday, KU will meet Hofstra before beginning bracket play.
Columbus, Ga. ? Kansas University split a pair of softball games against ranked opponents on Friday in the Leadoff Classic. The Jayhawks knocked off No. 24 Massachusetts 4-1 in the opener before falling 3-0 to No. 4 Alabama.
KU (7-6) is scheduled to play No. 6 Arizona State at noon today before beginning bracket play.
In the first game Friday, freshman Kara Pierce tossed a three-hitter and Leah Tabb, Courtney Wright, Katie Campbell and Christi Musser all doubled in the fourth inning as the Jayhawks spilled UMass (3-3).
Kansas snapped a 1-1 tie with a three-run fourth. Tabb started the rally with a one-out double and scored on Wright’s two-bagger down the right-field line.
Albuquerque, N.M. Kansas University dropped its first game of the softball season, 12-1 against Cal State Fullerton, but bounced back to defeat New Mexico, 7-6, Friday in the Diamond Invitational.
Leah Tabb hit home runs in both games, including a grand slam, for KU and finished the day with five RBIs.
Shelly Musser and Erin Garvey both had two runs, one hit and an RBI in KU’s victory over New Mexico. KU rallied to win that game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Amy Hulse went 3-for-3. Box scores on Page 9C.

Leah Tabb had two hits, including a double, with two RBIs versus Washburn. Katie Campbell had a hit and two RBIs.
Kelly Campbell pitched five innings to earn the victory in the nightcap. She struck out six. Mel Wallach pitched the final two innings. Courtney Wright, Tabb and Katie Campbell had back-to-back doubles in the fifth. KU will meet Johnson County CC at noon today and will play again at either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.
