Robert Hemenway is headed to Peru to pick up an honorary degree.
Hemenway will arrive Friday in Peru for a one-week trip funded by the Kansas University Endowment Association.
“It’s a full working trip,” KU spokesman Todd Cohen said.
Hemenway will receive an honorary degree from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima. The university will honor Hemenway for his leadership and his biography of author Zora Neale Hurston, Cohen said.
KU and the Peru university have had connections for 40 years. KU anthropologists and biologists have studied the people, plants and animals living in the Peruvian rain forest near Lima.
Next week, Hemenway will attend a reception for 60 KU alumni and donors in Lima. KU typically has about 15 students from Peru enrolled each year.
He also plans to meet with John Hamilton, the U.S. ambassador to Peru; Nicolas Lynch, minister of education; and other educational officials.
He also will visit the Anne Sullivan Center, a school for poor children with autism or severe mental retardation. The school was founded by Liliana Mayo, who earned two graduate degrees in human development from KU.
