The executive dean of Kansas University’s School of Medicine has accepted a position as dean of the University of Minnesota’s Medical School.
Deborah E. Powell, who has been at KU since 1997, interviewed for the Minnesota position in April. A search committee today forwarded her name to the Minnesota Board of Regents. The board is expected to take action on the recommendation next week at its regularly scheduled meeting.
If approved, Powell would be the first female dean of that university’s medical school and one of just nine female deans among the 125 U.S. medical schools. She would also be the first dean in nearly 90 years to come to the position from outside the university. She is expected to begin her duties in October.
Powell was one of five finalists for the position. She would replace Alfred F. Michael, who announced in September he would retire in June. He has served as dean since 1996.
