Rugged K-State awaits Jayhawks tonight

By J-W Staff Report     Jan 23, 2002

? Tickets for Kansas State University women’s basketball games are going faster than slop near a farrowing hut.

The Big 12 Conference-leading Wildcats will play in front of full houses this Sunday against Texas Tech and against Iowa State on Feb. 2. Moreover, fewer than 5,000 tickets remained late Tuesday for tonight’s clash with free-falling Kansas.

When: 7:05 tonight.Where: Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.Radio: KLWN (1320 AM).Records: KU 5-14 overall, 0-6 Big 12; K-State 17-2, 5-1.

Tipoff will be 7:05 p.m. in Bramlage Coliseum.

The No. 11-ranked ‘Cats played in front of their first-ever sellout on Jan. 9 when 13,466 fans crammed Bramlage to watch an 85-71 victory over Nebraska.

Kansas State (17-2, 5-1) is on top of the Big 12 for the first time. On the flip side, Kansas (5-14, 0-6) is headed for its first last-place conference finish.

Nevertheless, KU coach Marian Washington remains optimistic.

“I will always go in there thinking that we are going to win,” she said. “We love beating Kansas State, but personally I love beating them all. Because of the in-state rivalry, obviously it’s a big game. Hopefully, it will be a good game.”

K-State boasts a balanced attack with four players averaging double-figure scoring.

Laurie Koehn, a red-shirt freshman from Moundridge, leads the ‘Cats with 18.3 points per game. She’s shooting 43.2 percent from three-point range. Last year’s Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Nicole Ohlde, is second in scoring and rebounding (17.4 points, 8.1 boards). Ohlde is from Clay Center.

Kendra Wecker, a true freshman from Marysville, is averaging 16.4 points and is the ‘Cats’ leading rebounder (8.4). The other Wildcat in double figures is Megan Mahoney, a true freshman from Black Hawk, S.D. The 6-foot forward is averaging10.5 points and 5.8 rebounds.

Kristin Rethman, a 5-foot-9 senior from Centralia, rounds out the Big 12’s most potent starting lineup.

Kansas has won four straight from K-State, including a 65-62 victory in Manhattan last season, and 19 of the last 23 meetings between the two Sunflower State rivals. But the Jayhawks have fallen on hard times after losing their top three scorers in 2000-2001 to graduation.

KU is mired in a six-game losing streak, the longest in school history. The Jayhawks have also dropped 11 of their last 13 outings. Their last win was an 88-53 romp over Morgan State last Dec. 29.

In dropping the half-dozen in a row, all to Big 12 foes, the Jayhawks have shot 35.1 percent from the floor, including 25 percent from three-point range, and have been outrebounded by an average of 43.2 to 32.5.

Kansas will be back home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. battle with Oklahoma State. There will be a game between KU alums at 11 a.m. as part of Alumni Weekend.
