As a North Carolina graduate, former UNC assistant coach and mentor to current Tar Heels coach Matt Doherty, Roy Williams feels the pain the former KU assistant is experiencing in Chapel Hill, N.C.
UNC has a 5-10 record under second-year coach Doherty.
“I’ve talked to him every week,” Williams said. “He’s a very tough competitor and this is not an easy time for him.
“He’s an extremely tough individual. He’s a very bright individual. He’s going to hold himself to the fire and everybody else, they’re going to keep trying each and every day to get better. He’s not going to pack it in or do anything drastic and give up on this season.
“What should they do to get out of the funk?” Williams continued. “I’m not that much brighter than Matt. I’m no brighter than Matt. If I could figure it out, so could he. If they’ll stick to what he’s telling them to do every single day that’s their best chance to get out of it. They’re playing a very difficult schedule against good teams and the other teams have to cooperate some.
“In college basketball, most of the time the other team doesn’t want to cooperate.”
The good news is Doherty is bringing in a stellar recruiting class next season.
“Better days are ahead,” Williams said.
