Boschee gets record despite flu

KU coach Roy Williams yells at the Jayhawks in the first half. Williams became irate after three straight turnovers in the second half of the Jayhawks' 79-61 rout of Oklahoma State on Tuesday in Stillwater, Okla.

? That feeling in the pit of Jeff Boschee’s stomach wasn’t just from becoming the Jayhawks’ all-time leading three-point shooter on Tuesday night against Oklahoma State.

Boschee, KU’s senior guard, battled flu-like symptoms all day, but drilled the record-breaking trey with 5:53 remaining in the first half of Kansas’ 79-61 victory.

“It’s a good thing to have,” said Boschee, who hit two of three threes to reach 271 in his career. “I feel proud about breaking it. Hopefully, I can continue on and keep making threes throughout the rest of the season.”

Boschee, who was replaced shortly after breaking the mark and received a gentle pat on the back from KU coach Roy Williams, broke a deadlock with former Jayhawk Billy Thomas.

“I really haven’t talked to him about it,” Boschee said. “Billy’s an exceptional shooter.”

As far as the flu, Boschee apparently fell ill on Monday night after the Jayhawks had arrived in Stillwater.

“Last night I came down with flu-like symptoms,” KU’s 6-foot-1 guard said. “I had chills, was sweating, couldn’t sleep. I didn’t eat much today. I nibbled on a twice-baked potato, had Sprite and some soup. It’s just a touch of the flu.”

Following the game, Boschee returned to the court for about 15 minutes to hold court with his brother, Mike, who was in town for the record-breaking performance.

The younger Boschee credited big bro for some of the secret to his success.

“I think just working on my shot every single year throughout my whole life,” Boschee said, “my brother teaching me how to shoot the basketball and going through those drills every single day.”

When he wasn’t setting school records, Boschee was shutting down OSU standout Maurice Baker. The senior guard was limited to six points on 2-of-12 shooting. The pair of guards seemed to feed off defending each other.

“He did a good job defending and sometimes they had (Melvin) Sanders on me,” Boschee said. “I just got in my mind that I really wanted to make sure I stopped him because he’s basically the main focus of their offense. I concentrated on that from the start of the game.”

As for handing the Cowboys their worst home loss in coach Eddie Sutton’s 12-year tenure, Boschee was more concerned with KU returning to the win column.

“I think it’s a great accomplishment and it says a lot about our defense,” Boschee said, “especially coming off of a loss like UCLA where we didn’t play good and we didn’t play hard. Coming in and playing like we did was very exceptional.”
