The Jayhawks made the first successful defense of their No. 1 AP ranking tonight with a thoroughly dominating performance over the visiting Nebraska Cornhuskers. When someone brags that a particular game was over in five minutes, that is usually just a bunch of hot air.
Tonight, there would be a lot of truth to that saying. Just after five minutes had gone by, Kansas was up 22-4. A three-pointer later, and the Hawks were up by 21 points.
Had KU kept up that torrid pace, they would have been pushing 80 points by halftime. As it was, Kansas seemed to slack off once they hit 50 points as they went into cruise control and it showed.
Kansas cruised to an astounding 57-24 halftime lead.
As fast and hard as they came out of the gate in the first half, KU was rather slothful to start the second. Nebraska went on a quick or rather, slow 5-1 run before the first time out. It was not long after that when Roy Williams made his first five-for-five substitution for all the starters.
Where the first half bolted and ran, the second limped and crawled. Kansas outscored NU in the second by a paltry 39-33. Do not misunderstand: Kansas played strongly, but conservatively, with the deep roster seeing many minutes.
Aaron Miles ended the night with 12 assists a new record for KU freshmen. Another record set in tonight’s onslaught belongs to Jeff Boschee for three-point tries.
Nick Collison led Kansas with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Drew Gooden and Wayne Simien also notched double-doubles, with 16 and 12 points, and 12 and 10 rebounds respectively.
Kirk Hinrich scored 13 points to go with eight assists, and Jeff Boschee ended with 16 points.
Next up for the Hawks is a trip to sunny California to take on UCLA. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
