? Kansas University’s women’s basketball team, which lost five of its final seven nonconference games, will face mighty Texas Tech to open the Big 12 season today.

Tipoff will be 8 tonight at the ninth-ranked Red Raiders’ United Spirit Arena.

Tech improved to 8-2 by beating then-No. 3 Vanderbilt, 81-71, on Saturday. That same day, KU improved to 5-8 with an 88-53 rout of winless Morgan State.

That and an 82-66 victory over Wichita State accounted for KU’s only victories in December, when the Jayhawks went 2-5.

Jia Perkins, a 5-foot-8 sophomore guard, leads the Raiders with 16.3 points per game, and she adds 6.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game. Natalie Ritchie, a 5-9 sophomore guard, contributes 12.3 points per game, while 6-foot senior forward Amber Tarr contributes 9.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Dionne Brown, a sophomore forward for Texas Tech, has been released from the team, Tech coach Marsha Sharp said. Brown averaged 5.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in six games this season.

KC Hilgenkamp and Selena Scott lead the Jayhawks with 12.8 points per game apiece.
