Jayhawks ring in the year with a win: KU 81, Valpo 73

By Chris Cottrell     Jan 2, 2002

Last game, Drew Gooden went into halftime stuck on his 999th career point. Tonight, Nick Collison went into the lockers stuck on 998. Shortly into the second half, Collison rolled one in to become the 44th Jayhawk to notch over 1,000 points.

The frigid temperatures did not keep the fans from filling Allen Fieldhouse, but it did keep Kansas from getting off to a hot start-or even lukewarm, for that matter. Valparaiso scored the night’s first points, and jumped out to a 11-4 lead in the opening minutes.

Over the following eight minutes, however, Kansas outscored Valpo 27-8, taking the lead during that run at the 10:50 mark. KU never trailed after that, but the visitors did pull even several times throughout the rest of the game.

KU’s largest lead was 12 points in the first half, but Valpo then went on a 14-3 run of their own to close within one. KU then took the half’s last six points into the lockers.

The persistent Crusaders kept in the contest, playing strongly down to the end. They tied the game at 66, and again at 68 with about four minutes to play. The Jayhawks’ endgame proved the stronger, and Kansas ended up with an eight-point win.

Drew Gooden led all scoring with a monstrous performance: 30 points, 18 rebounds, five assists and no turnovers. Nick Collison provided KU’s only other double-double, with 14 points and 15 boards. Wayne Simien scored 13 points, and Jeff Boschee added 12. Aaron Miles scored seven, but also served up eight assists.

Next up for Kansas: a trip to Boulder to open Big 12 play. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
