Drew Gooden received a warm yet rather short in duration ovation after scoring the 1,000th point of his college basketball career on Saturday night at Kansas City’s Kemper Arena.
It’s Nick Collison’s turn to feel the love if he can score eight points tonight against Valparaiso. Tipoff for the KU-Valpo nonconference basketball contest is 7:05 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.
“Drew and I have not talked about it at all,” said Collison, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound junior forward, who enters with 992 career points in 78 games.
The 6-10 Gooden has scored 1,008 points in 72 career contests.
“We have had good careers,” Collison said. “We both play together well. A lot is to be said for the players around us. They get us the ball. Coach stresses getting the ball inside. In the style we play, we will score some points.”
KU coach Roy Williams said Collison’s feat will be recognized during a stoppage of play tonight if and when the Jayhawk junior scores eight points. On Saturday in KC, the public address announcer recognized Gooden’s feat as the Jayhawks back-pedaled on defense after Gooden made a free throw.
“It’s always special to get 1,000 points,” Williams said. “I am not meaning to be critical, but I wish we waited Saturday until a dead ball to announce it so people could cheer for Drew the right way. We discussed it before the game. It wasn’t very good coaching on my part because I was told we’d announce it at an appropriate time. I guess my opinion of appropriate time was not the same. Two people in the stands told me they did not know what the announcement was.”
Will there be an announcement for Gooden tonight, too?
“We’re thinking about it,” Williams said.
Injury update: Williams said freshmen Keith Langford (bone chip, ankle) and Wayne Simien (ankle sprain) have practiced hard the past two days showing no signs of discomfort.
“Keith’s ankle appears to be much better,” Williams said. “Wayne hasn’t had any backlash after two good practices. He practiced well enough today (Tuesday) to convince me to invite him to my house to eat dinner tonight. ‘Wicked Wanda’ (Williams’ wife Wanda) is cooking a meal up (for Jayhawks).”
Good grades: Williams said first semester grades are in and everybody is eligible to continue playing basketball for the Jayhawks.
“We got the grades back. The guys really did very, very well,” Williams said on his Hawk Talk radio show. “Some that I’ve encouraged more than others. I don’t have anybody I was really disappointed with, really upset with
“Some guys really, really performed. We already know what kind of kids they are. We know little more each and every night what kind of player they are. Now we get the academic side of it going too. We’ve even got a couple freshmen who maybe can get some cars back. Mom and dad decided they couldn’t have (cars) unless they did it academically.”
Next year’s nonconference slate: KU will play Arizona and UCLA at Allen Fieldhouse, Williams reported, and also travel to both Tulsa and the University of Oregon. The Oregon game has been set up for Aaron Miles and Michael Lee of Portland, Ore. Also, KU is playing in the Preseason NIT, which should land the Jayhawks two home games and a possible trip to New York for the semifinals and/or finals. KU is also to play in the Pete Newell Classic in California, Williams said Tuesday.
