KU not considering Classic

By Staff     Jan 1, 2002

Contrary to a published report, Kansas University’s football team is not contemplating opening its 2002 season at Ohio State in the Pigskin Classic in late August.

“There were some preliminary discussions in August, but nothing since,” KU associate athletics director Richard Konzem said. “We’re not planning on playing in that event.”

The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported Sunday that Ohio State likely would play host to the Pigskin Classic, an NCAA-exempt event that would give OSU 13 games next season. The story says OSU’s opponent according to coach Jim Tressel would be Colorado, Kansas or Kansas State.

“We talked about it, but we’d open with three straight games on the road,” Konzem said. “Next year is a 12-game year anyway, and that would be 13. (KU athletics director) Al Bohl thought we probably wouldn’t be quite there for it. If they called now, that’s something Al and coach (Mark) Mangino would have to sit down and visit about, but I’d be surprised if we do that. This is the first I’ve heard of it since August.”
