KU admissions official to leave

The director of admissions and scholarships at Kansas University is leaving after five years for a job at the University of Nebraska.

Alan Cerveny is returning to his alma mater, which he said hopes to emulate success KU has had recruiting students.

“They’re looking at revamping their recruiting program,” he said. “I think a lot of people have been aware of the way our recruiting program has been revamped at Kansas.”

Cerveny, a native of Fairbury, Neb., received his master’s degree from the University of Nebraska and served two years as acting director of admissions there. He and his wife both have family in Nebraska.

“I’m leaving to return home,” he said.

During Cerveny’s tenure, the average ACT score of freshmen increased from 23.8 to 24.5. KU enrolled 56 National Merit scholars in 1996 and enrolled more than 100 the last three years.

The freshmen classes in 2000 and 2001 were the largest since 1989, Cerveny said.

“We’ve been increasing our enrollments significantly since 1996, while at the same time our freshman profile is going up,” he said. “It’s pretty remarkable to see your enrollments going up and you’re getting better students.”

Cerveny, 47, begins his new job April 1. He made $83,450 yearly at KU but declined to say how much he will make in Nebraska. Nebraska officials also declined to release the figure until they make their formal announcement.

“They’re making me a really nice offer to go there,” Cerveny said.

Jim Carothers, KU’s interim associate provost, said Cerveny had “served us well.”

“He leaves a fine staff, prepared to continue their good work,” Carothers said. “We wish him well in his homecoming to Nebraska.”

Before coming to KU, Cerveny served nine years as associate vice president of student affairs at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va.

KU officials said they would conduct a national search for Cerveny’s replacement. In the meantime, Lisa Pinamonti, associate director of admissions and scholarships since 2000, will serve as interim director. She joined KU in 1999 after working in the admissions offices at Wichita State University and Pittsburg State University.
