Waltz, a 6-footer from Blue Valley North who was slowed at midseason by a foot stress fracture, made 8 of 17 shots, including 3 of 5 from three-point range. She also led KU with eight rebounds and counted a career-high five assists.

“I think she has great potential,” KU coach Marian Washington said of Waltz. “She’s only going to get stronger and more confident.”

Iowa State (21-6, 9-6 Big 12) did not pull away in the turnover-filled game until the Cylcones went on a 15-3 run in the final six minutes.

Kansas (5-23, 0-15) stayed close mainly because of Iowa State’s 20 turnovers. But the Jayhawks turned it over 24 times and were outscored 19-5 at the free throw line. ISU went to the foul stripe 21 times to KU’s nine.

“You can’t win games when you give them 21 free throws and you shoot only nine,” Washington said. “It’s really outrageous. It’s tough.”

If Kansas loses to Texas in its home finale on Tuesday, the Jayhawks would become the first Big 12 team to go winless in the conference. The Big 12’s first season was 1996-97.

Angie Welle scored 21 points and Lindsey Wilson added 16 points for Iowa State. Tracy Gahan and Mary Cofield each scored 11.

Nikki White scored 11 points for the Jayhawks and KC Hilgenkamp had six assists.
