The second finalist for Kansas University’s dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will visit campus early next month, KU officials announced Friday.
John Lipski, head of the Spanish, Italian and Portuguese department at Pennsylvania State University, will meet with students, faculty and staff at 3:30 p.m. March 4 at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.
Lipski is one of four finalists for the dean position, which oversees nearly 14,000 students and 550 faculty members in the largest of KU’s 14 schools.
Kip Hodges, professor of geology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, visited campus Monday. KU hasn’t officially announced the other two candidates who are slated for visits March 7 and March 11 but sources have confirmed that Kim Wilcox, executive director of the Kansas Board of Regents, is one of them.
Lipski has been chairman of his department since last year. Before that, he had been at the University of New Mexico since 1992. He also taught Spanish at the University of Florida from 1988 to 1992, the University of Houston from 1981 to 1988, Michigan State University from 1975 to 1981, and Kean College of New Jersey from 1973 to 1975.
His research concentrates on bilingualism, variations in Spanish, Creole languages and the African contribution to Spanish and Portuguese. He has written nine books on languages.
The new dean, who likely will be hired by the end of the school year and begin July 1, will replace Sally Frost-Mason, who left last spring to become provost at Purdue University.
Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett, associate provost, has served as interim dean since Frost-Mason left.
